Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper can reach 50% and sit entirely outside CUSMA's protection, a gap that matters more after the United States declined on July 1 to renew CUSMA for a new sixteen year term. The agreement stays in force through 2036, but is now subject to annual review rather than the original six year cycle. With roughly 76% of Canada's goods exports going to the United States, that annual cycle now touches the majority of export revenue for trade exposed, Canadian-controlled private corporation owners.
