Bar chart showing Canada's September 8 counter-tariff rates reaching 50% on selected U.S. import lines.

Canada's counter-tariffs take effect September 8, applying rates as high as 50% to roughly $27.6 billion of U.S. imports, matching the U.S. Section 338 tariffs dollar for dollar. For Canadian-controlled private corporations that source tariffed U.S. inputs, the resulting margin compression can temporarily depress the valuation used to execute or refresh an estate freeze. That creates a narrow window worth revisiting before the tariffs take hold.
