Old Age Security benefits are reduced once a retiree's net income passes a set threshold, with the clawback reaching full recovery at $152,062 for the July 2026 to June 2027 benefit year. The threshold is based on income from the prior tax year, so a large capital gain realized in 2026, such as one taken during this year's record run in Canadian equities and gold, will not affect OAS payments until the period beginning July 2027, a full year after the gain is reported.
