Canada's unemployment rate has stayed within a narrow band for a full year, a stretch spanning five months since a widening Middle East conflict began dominating headlines. Despite that escalation, the domestic labour market has shown little visible strain; the Bank of Canada's own survey work instead found a sharp rise in the share of businesses budgeting for a recession, the channel through which the war has actually reached the economy. The reading lands as the Bank enters its blackout period ahead of a July 15 rate decision.
