Step chart of the Bank of Canada policy rate since June 2024 alongside the 2-year government bond yield level.

The Bank of Canada has held its policy rate for seven straight decisions, while the bond market has pushed the 2-year yield well above it, a sign that investors expect tighter policy. The next decision, on October 28, comes with a new Monetary Policy Report. Oil was the main driver of rising hike odds in September, and core inflation does not yet force a move. The labour market has softened, with job losses in August and wage growth at its lowest since 2017.
