Bar chart showing top TSX movers on July 7, with energy and oil-linked stocks up while two mining stocks fell sharply.

The split traces back to Wednesday's oil sanctions news, which lifted oil-linked names on the strength of WTI's jump to $74.35 while a firmer US dollar weighed on mining names in the same session. The VIX also rose more than thirteen percent to 18.33, still well below levels that would signal broad de-risking. The divergence illustrates why a portfolio's resource sector exposure needs a sub-sector view this week rather than a sector-level one, since the same headline helped one holding and hurt another inside the same broad allocation.
