The Canadian index fell while the three major United States indexes rose, with the Nasdaq leading on gains in mega-cap technology. In Toronto, energy and banks were the drag. Cenovus fell about 3% after announcing its Athabasca deal, and RBC, TD, BMO and Scotiabank each lost between 0.5% and 0.9%. The decline left the TSX more than 4% below its August 25 close.
