August's job losses were concentrated outside manufacturing, which was the lone sector to add positions while business services, public administration, natural resources, and utilities all cut staff. The decline lands alongside wage growth slowing to its weakest pace since 2017 and headline inflation running near 3%, mostly on gasoline costs tied to Middle East tensions. The Bank of Canada's October decision now has to weigh a labour market and an inflation print pointing in opposite directions.
