WTI crude has climbed 25 per cent since mid-August as a tanker war in the Strait of Hormuz escalated, with US strikes on Iranian vessels and Iranian retaliation against ships using alternate routes cutting traffic through the chokepoint by more than a third. Official and independent shipping data disagree sharply on how much oil is still moving through the strait, adding uncertainty on top of the price move itself. Polling shows only about a third of Americans support the underlying conflict, a domestic pressure point against further escalation.
