Thursday's gain traced back to a U.S. semiconductor rally and easing bond yields, after an oversubscribed IPO from SK Hynix lifted Micron and Sandisk and pushed the Nasdaq up 1.3%, rather than to developments in the widening Iran conflict. Gold miners and the big banks led the advance, while individual energy names rallied even as the broader price of crude eased. The index has held inside a roughly 600-point range for five weeks, a band that has not widened even as the war expanded to two new countries.
