The prescribed rate is reset each quarter from the average three-month Government of Canada Treasury bill yield in the first month of the preceding quarter, rounded up to the next whole percentage. Year-end family loan planning therefore turns on calendar dates rather than a rate cliff: interest on a 2026 loan is due by January 30, 2027, and 2026 RRSP contributions by March 1. Loans made at 4%, 5% and 6% keep those rates.
