Step chart of the CRA prescribed interest rate by quarter from the third quarter of 2022 to the fourth quarter of 2026.

The prescribed rate is unchanged for a sixth straight quarter, and a loan made before December 31 locks that rate in for life. The first-quarter 2027 rate will be set from October Treasury bill auctions, and the latest auction came in well below the level needed to lift it. Interest on existing loans must be paid by January 30, which falls on a Saturday in 2027, and a missed payment attributes the income back to the lender.
