The Canada Revenue Agency's prescribed interest rate has held at 3% for five straight quarters, its longest stable stretch since 2020 and 2021. The rate is set quarterly from short term government bond yields and locks in for the life of a family loan once advanced, removing the timing pressure families otherwise face when deciding whether to set up a loan now or wait. The Department of Finance opened pre-Budget 2026 consultations on July 6, giving families a window to lock in terms before any new proposals take shape.
