The prescribed rate is the benchmark for family and spousal loans, and the rate in force on the day a loan is made is the one that applies to it. Each quarter is therefore a separate planning window, and the current rate sits well below its 2024 peak. The rate is derived from Treasury bill yields and rounded up to a whole percentage point, and interest on the loan must be paid by January 30 each year to keep the attribution protection.
