Line chart comparing WTI crude oil, up 19 percent, against gold, which has fallen, since a Saudi pipeline shutdown.

WTI crude has climbed 19 per cent since a Saudi Arabian pipeline shutdown removed one of the region's main workarounds for the Strait of Hormuz closure, while gold has fallen over the same stretch instead of rising with it. Gold typically gains as a safe-haven asset during supply shocks like this one, so its decline points to a different force at work. A Federal Reserve rate decision due later in the week appears to be pulling gold lower even as the same oil shock keeps pushing crude higher.
