Oil has been the loud part of the market since early September, with WTI moving 2% or more on 13 of 19 sessions. Five closes at or above $100 between September 10 and September 17 were followed by a steady decline. The series uses the continuous front-month contract, so the last figure differs from the November contract quoted elsewhere. Swings this frequent make an index that barely moves look calm by comparison.
