The record close was carried almost entirely by financials and materials as bank earnings season opened strong, with Scotiabank posting a record quarter and BMO delivering 22% earnings growth. Energy stocks moved the opposite direction the same session as WTI crude fell for a third straight day on easing Iran sanctions and Hormuz shipping-corridor diplomacy. Energy represents roughly 12% of the index by weight, so Tuesday's record reflects a composition effect rather than a broad-based rally.
