The S&P/TSX Composite fell back below Wednesday's record close of 36,662 on Thursday, a session led lower by materials shares, the same day gold spot prices set a fresh high near 4,491 US dollars an ounce. The pairing that had powered Wednesday's fourth consecutive record, financials and gold miners moving together, broke apart within a single session. A cooler US inflation print that eased pressure on the Federal Reserve did not produce the same relief for Canadian bond yields, leaving the two markets diverging rather than moving in tandem.
