Bar chart showing gold and silver rising while the TSX and crude oil fell on September 18.

Six major markets split unevenly on September 18: silver rose 2.32 percent and gold 1.00 percent even as both Canadian and U.S. bond yields climbed, while the TSX Composite, WTI crude, and Brent crude all fell. That breaks the usual pattern, since a non-yielding asset like gold typically loses ground when yields rise. The likelier explanation is that gold is now tracking uncertainty over how much further the Federal Reserve's rate-hiking cycle has to run, a bid that responds to policy division rather than to the yield level itself.
