Line chart showing the S&P/TSX Composite's daily closes through July 2026 into the Civic Holiday closure.

Canadian markets were closed Monday for the Civic Holiday, a tradition that traces to an 1869 Toronto City Council request for a midsummer break and spread nationally by imitation rather than legislation. The TSX Composite finished the preceding Friday down 0.79 percent, weighed down by weakness in gold miners and TELUS's dividend cut, but the index was still on track for a fourth consecutive monthly gain. Trading resumed Tuesday.
