Line chart of the S&P/TSX Composite daily close from August 25 to October 9, 2026, ending with a jobs-day gain.

Canada lost 68,300 jobs in September, concentrated in the public sector, yet the index rose because the weak data cut swap-implied odds of a Bank of Canada hike on October 28 to 27% from 40%. The gain turned a weekly loss into a small weekly gain. Gold and materials stocks rose, and the Canadian dollar weakened, so the move was smaller in United States dollar terms.
