Bar chart comparing normal daily oil transit volumes through the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb corridor.

The Strait of Hormuz normally carries about 20.9 million barrels a day, more than double the roughly 8.6 million moving through the Bab el-Mandeb corridor that Houthi forces targeted over the weekend, helping explain why markets treat the US-Iran pause as the dominant signal. Hormuz's actual flow had fallen to about 14.6 million barrels a day in early 2026, down almost 30% from a year earlier, per new EIA tracking. Every prior pause in this war has broken, including an April ceasefire and a June agreement that unravelled by mid-July.
