Physical gold and silver bullion can be held inside a TFSA, RRSP, FHSA, RRIF, RESP or RDSP, but only at 99.5% purity and only while a trustee holds it on the client's behalf. Personal possession loses that registered shelter entirely, and any gain is then taxed as an ordinary capital gain outside the plan. Gold ETFs and mining stocks avoid the custody complication and remain eligible across every registered account type, which is why most registered-account gold exposure takes one of those two forms.
