Chart comparing the best non-redeemable five-year GIC rates with the Government of Canada five-year bond yield in early October 2026.

Five-year GICs currently pay more than government bonds of the same term, but the premium ignores differences in liquidity because the certificates are non-redeemable. GIC interest is taxed in full, while capital gains are only partly included in income, so the account holding the certificate changes what the investor keeps. Registered accounts such as the TFSA, RRSP and FHSA shelter the interest, and bond price declines have created usable losses in non-registered accounts.
