Line chart of the Canadian dollar's monthly average value against the US dollar, declining to 70.89 cents.

Statistics Canada's June trade release flagged the Canadian dollar's steepest monthly decline since October 2022, a drop of 1.7 cents US. Bank of Canada data shows the softening continued into July, with the currency down roughly 2.4 cents from February's 73.25 cents US. The move carries a tax-tracking wrinkle: the $200 exemption under subsection 39(2) applies only to cash conversions, not to securities dispositions or corporate accounts, which face full FX gain or loss inclusion.
