Five widely tracked assets moved in different directions on July 31. Gold, silver, and the TSX Composite all fell as the US dollar strengthened and the 30-year US Treasury yield jumped past 5.2%, a 19-year high, after the Federal Reserve pulled back its forward guidance. WTI crude moved the other way, rising as Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps struck two tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. The Canadian dollar held roughly flat against its US counterpart despite the divergence elsewhere in markets.
