Line chart showing gold prices swinging sharply lower then higher over two weeks in late August.

A blowout US payrolls report showing 162,000 new jobs, far above the roughly 58,000 consensus estimate, reversed a rate-cut narrative built two days earlier when a private payrolls estimate came in far weaker. Gold had already swung from nearly $4,698 an ounce to $4,396 in three sessions before this rebound, a roughly $300 round trip inside eight sessions. The move reaches Canadian portfolios through TSX-listed precious metals miners, several of which posted mid-to-high single digit gains on individual sessions this week.
