Bar chart showing gold's December contract as the top-gaining asset class, up 2.72 percent, during a risk-on trading session.

Gold's December contract rose 2.72% to $4,540.90 Wednesday, its sharpest gain of the week and the top mover among seven asset classes tracked, even as a Treasury debt buyback and a tariff truce with Canada drove a broad risk-on session across stocks, oil and the Canadian dollar. Both moves should typically reduce demand for gold, a non-yielding asset, yet the metal rallied anyway. The divergence comes as three Federal Reserve regional presidents have signalled they want a rate hike, with Chair Warsh set to speak at Jackson Hole this month.
