Two G7 central banks moved in opposite directions the week of September 15: the Federal Reserve raised its policy rate a quarter point to 3.75 to 4 percent, while the Bank of Canada held at 2.25 percent for a ninth straight meeting and floated cuts. Canadian bond yields climbed regardless, with the five-year Government of Canada yield near a 52-week high. The TSX Composite slid off its August highs but was cushioned by Hormuz-driven oil near 97 dollars a barrel and a fresh gold record near 4,390 dollars.
