Line chart of the Cboe VIX volatility index daily close from September 1 to October 7, 2026, ending nearly unchanged.

The VIX barely moved on October 7 even as Canadian equities fell on rate fears, because the index is built from United States large-cap options and does not register a repricing of Canadian rates. In September, three TSX declines of more than 1% each lifted it by roughly one point or a little more. The five-year Government of Canada yield rose 15 basis points on both September 10 and September 23.
