Line chart showing the USD/CAD exchange rate rising this week amid Canada-US tariff tensions.

The Canadian dollar has weakened against the US dollar this week even as oil prices, which the loonie often tracks, fell sharply over the same period. The divergence traces to trade policy rather than crude: Canada's retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20 billion of US imports and Washington's confirmed 2027 duties on Canadian autos and steel are driving the currency move instead. The pair has risen since its August 21 three-month low.
